Summer style should never come before heat safety. Cats and dogs can overheat in clothing, especially in humid weather, direct sun, poorly ventilated spaces, or during exercise. In many summer situations, the best outfit is no outfit at all.

Heat safety comes first

  • Choose cooler times of day for walks and play.
  • Provide shade, ventilation, and fresh drinking water.
  • Test outdoor surfaces with your hand and avoid hot pavement.
  • Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even briefly.
  • Take extra care with flat-faced, very young, senior, overweight, thick-coated, or unwell pets.

Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting, collapse, or unusually red or pale gums may signal a heat emergency. Move the pet to a cooler place and contact a veterinarian urgently. Do not use ice-cold water or delay professional advice.

If you use summer clothing

  1. Keep it light: choose a breathable, thin fabric with minimal coverage.
  2. Keep it loose enough to move: check the neck, chest, armholes, and belly.
  3. Keep it brief: use clothing in a cool, supervised setting and remove it at the first sign of discomfort.
  4. Keep it dry: a damp garment can become heavy, rub the skin, or retain warmth depending on the material and conditions.

Do not assume a garment provides UV protection unless the maker states a tested rating. Clothing does not make midday heat safe.

Good times—and poor times—for an outfit

SituationSafer approach
Cool, air-conditioned indoor photoA brief lightweight outfit may be suitable for a relaxed pet.
Early walk in mild weatherUsually use normal walking gear only; carry water and monitor your pet.
Hot, humid, or sunny outingSkip clothing, shorten activity, and prioritise cooling and shade.
Car travelUse ventilation and secure travel equipment; never rely on clothing for protection.

Accessories in warm weather

A lightweight bandana should not be tight or stay wet against the skin. Protective eyewear requires careful fitting and gradual training and is not appropriate for every dog. Hats and costumes can obstruct vision or trap heat, so reserve them for very short, supervised sessions in a cool room.

Cleaning and checking summer gear

Wash items after sweat, dirt, or outdoor use, following the label. Dry fully and inspect for stretched elastic, damaged fasteners, loose decorations, or rough seams before the next use.

Enjoy the season safely

Plan outings around the weather, watch your pet rather than the clock, and make comfort the deciding factor. A short photo in a cool room can capture the look without asking a pet to wear an outfit through a hot day.
