A custom pet portrait is only as clear as the image supplied with the order. This quick guide explains how to choose and prepare a photo for a personalised necklace, bracelet, ring, keychain, or other engraved keepsake.
The strongest photo has five qualities
- Sharp focus: the eyes, nose, and edge of the face are clear when viewed at full size.
- Even light: the face is not lost in deep shadow or blown out by flash.
- Useful angle: a front-facing or gentle three-quarter view usually preserves recognisable features.
- Open space: the ears and head are not cut off, and there is room for cropping.
- Original resolution: use the camera file when possible, not a screenshot or compressed message preview.
Photos to avoid
- Motion blur, soft focus, or a very small subject
- Strong filters that change fur colour or facial detail
- Backlighting that turns the face into a silhouette
- A hand, toy, lead, or blanket covering key features
- A group photo when the product supports only one portrait
Dark, light, or long fur
For dark fur, choose a lighter background and soft light from the front or side. For white or pale fur, avoid an overexposed window or white background that erases the outline. For long-haired pets, pick a photo where the eyes and face shape are still visible.
Cropping and personalization
Do not crop too tightly before uploading unless the product specifically requests it. The maker may need extra space to shape the portrait for a round, oval, heart, or rectangular engraving area. Enter names and dates exactly as they should appear and confirm which side of the product receives each element.
A simple final check
- Is this the original file?
- Can you clearly see both eyes and the nose?
- Are the ears and outline complete?
- Does the selected product allow the number of subjects shown?
- Have you checked every letter and number?
When in doubt, prepare two candidate photos and use the product's current upload or contact instructions to ask which is more suitable.
